A good news for patients visiting Safdarjung Hospital for medical treatment. The Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan inaugurated most advanced healthcare facilities at Centre run Safdarjung hospital on Saturday.

These medical services include – Geriatric OPD, 3T MRI Facility, Biplane Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) Lab.

The health minister inspected the wards, OPD, OTs, Labs, pediatric ICUs, generic pharmacy and interacted with the patients and their caregivers. He also reviewed the registration-processes of patients, referral etc.  and visited the new Super Specialty Block.

“Today, we have started newer facilities in which ESWL Lab and Catheterization Laboratory are equipped with the most advanced technology. ESWL Lab will help us in removing the stone from bladder with more efficacy now. Treatment through ESWL is highly advanced and patient will get discharged in a daycare. With its state-of-the-art facilities, Safdarjung Hospital will soon be comparable to the best in the country and the world” said Dr Harsh Vardhan.

ESWL is an efficient non-surgical procedure for treating stones in the kidney or the ureter. Laser rays are targeted from outside the body at the stone which breaks it into pieces. Once the stones are broken into pieces, they are easily passed through urine.

(Prof) Dr. Anup Kumar, head of urology department at Safdarjung hospital told TheHealth, “It has an integrated system to monitor the patient during the procedure in which the doctor can sit in a separate room and treat the patient.  It has more power to break the stone having less pain and no cut. Patient will be requiring lesser number of sessions and shocks. Those stones which cannot be seen on X-ray, can be traced and broken through this machine. This is the most advanced machine having features of ultrasound and X-ray as well.”

Dr. Kumar added, “More than 50 percent of bladder stone patients can be treated through ESWL in which no anesthesia process is required. It will reduce the huge burden of patients on us. The cost of this treatment done by ESWL would be more than INR 50-60K at private hospitals which will be given free at Safdarjung hospital.

“Under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, health has been positioned as one of the top priorities of the government. Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendra is providing medicines at affordable with nominal rates,” said the union health minister.

For relief of elderly patients, the Geriatric OPD will be open every Sunday starting from Sunday i.e. July 28th, 2019 in the main OPD complex of Safdarjung Hospital with the following specialties: medicine, general surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, and orthopedics.

Last year, Prime Minister launched Ayushman Bharat Yojana to provide free medical health insurance for 5 lakh per family per year and covering people more than 50 Crore.
