aorta artery

Institute of Vascular and Endovascular Sciences

A Rare Case of Aneurysm: Delhi Docs Clear One Litre of Blood Clots From Heart Artery

Aneurysm

Doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has given a fresh lease of life to Sumit Kumar (name changed) by clearing one litre of blood clots from 20cm main heart artery. Sumit was leading a painful life due to his complications for the past one year.

A 30-year-old Kumar was diagnosed with ballooning of the main heart artery, a condition which  is called an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA).

The aorta artery takes clean blood from the heart and supplies to the body. It is life threatening, If it gets swollen up and burst.

Sumit’s aorta (artery) of the heart’s pumping chamber had swollen up to 20cm and could have burst anytime, normal size of the artery is 17 to 18mm, said doctors.

“The swollen up aorta (artery) was like a huge balloon filled with blood. It was a complex surgery conducted for 4 hours which involved high risk,” said Dr. V.S.Bedi, Chairman, Institute of Vascular and Endovascular Sciences, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital

A Rare Case of Aneurysm In Early Thirties:

“We were surprised to see 20cm large aneurysm in a 30 year old person as we see this kind of problem in 60-70 years age bracket commonly. It involved the risk of aneurysm rupture in Sumit’s case. There was already a leakage of blood from a focal rupture site and blood stored in a balloon’s shape inside the body. Generally, patients do not survive more than two days in such cases of aneurysm,” said Dr Bedi.

Sumit who hails from Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh told TheHealth, “I had backache for the last one year and gastro problem on regular intervals. Suddenly, in the last three months, the pain persisted longer than before and became unbearable too. I was diagnosed with Aneurysm after certain screening and tests at a local hospital. Doctors told me that I needed an advanced surgery as soon as possible. I approached doctors at SGRH. Team of Dr. Bedi did successful operation and saved my life.”

“The patient had consulted doctors at outside hospitals for its surgical treatment but was told that the surgery would entail prohibitive risk to life of the patient given the magnitude of the disease and size of the aneurysm.” Dr. Bedi added.

“During the surgery almost one litre (two kidney trays) of blood clots was removed. The anesthesia and complex perioperative hemodynamic changes during surgery were adeptly managed by Dr. K.K. Narani and team from the department of anesthesia, SGRH. This ensured complete stability and safety of the patient throughout the hazardous procedure,” said Dr. Bedi.

On completion of surgery, Sumit resumed normal body functions like eating, walking and sleeping without pain in a span of only two days.

After being given a new lease of life, he happily celebrated his birthday by cutting a cake with vascular surgery team in the hospital a day prior to his discharge after making a full and speedy recovery.
