The peak power demand of Delhi has broken all records on Monday because of the cooling load (ACs, Coolers and Fans). The power demand touched 7241 MW at 3:29 PM on July 1st, 2019. It has been the highest ever recorded in the history of power demand in Delhi.

“Delhi’s peak power demand during the summer of 2019 may clock 7400 MW – an increase of over 250% over the peak power demand of 2879 MW in 2002. Delhi’s power demand crossed the 6000 MW for the first time in 2016. The fact that the city’s power demand is consistently crossing the 6000 MW shows the robustness of the capital’s distribution and transmission system,” BSES said in the statement.

Power demand of Delhi is more than the power demand of Mumbai and Chennai clubbed together and thrice than the demand of Kolkata.

BSES stated, “Cooling load is the main reason behind the increase in Delhi’s power load.  In fact, according to estimates, almost 50% of Delhi’s power demand in summers is because of ACs, Coolers and Fans.”

“Maximum temperature of Delhi was recorded 43.8°C at Aya Nagar today. Heat Wave Conditions were observed in some parts over West Uttar Pradesh and in isolated pockets over Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, East Madhya Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, West Rajasthan and Bihar,” India Meteorological Department said in a statement.

Earlier, Delhi recorded 48 degree Celsius at Palam area– the highest temperature in June 2019. El Niño climate cycle in the Pacific Ocean is impacting weather globally.

Dr. R.K. Singal, Director of Internal Medicine, BLK Super Speciality Hospital said, “sudden rise in temperature from normal to extremely hot can make a person sick and prone to many diseases. Heat wave is the common sight in such hottest days. One should visit a doctor if (S)he feels unwell, headache, dizziness and exhausted because of staying out in the sun for long hours.”
