Indian Docs Removed The Largest Chest Tumor Robotically

Largest Chest Tumor

A team of doctors from Delhi’s BLK hospital have removed one of the largest chest tumor robotically from 54 year-old- Iakopo Molotii, who hails from Tuvalu.

According to doctors, it was the largest ever thyroid tumor within the thoracic cavity with a size of approximately (12×10 cm).

Iakopo had been suffering with breathing and cough for last many years. There was no relief to him even after visiting several doctors at his native place.

Dr. Surender Dabas, Chief of Surgical Oncology & Robotic Services, Dr. Ashwani Sharma and Dr. Navdeep Singh Nanda conducted the surgeries.

“The Tumor was so big that it was compressing the windpipe and had completely involved the vein of left upper limb with multiple large collaterals,” informed Dr. Dabas.

“We did Angiography of chest and conducted biopsy which showed a colloid goiter (benign disease), and it was densely going between main arteries arising from heart” said Dr. Ashwani Sharma – Associate Director, Surgical Oncology, BLK Cancer Centre.

“This tumor could have been removed by cutting the chest bone. But patient wanted it to be removed with a minimally invasive technique using robotic technology. Patient specifically travelled to India for this treatment,” said Dr. Dabas adding that the surgery lasted for five hours.

The patient has recovered well. He has been discharged after four days of operation, he added.

Experts say that in the last one decade there have been a major change in minimally invasive chest procedures for lung and mediastinum diseases. Mediastinal goiters and ectopic thyroids represent rare chest diseases.

“Such ailments were treated in the past through sternotomy, thoracotomy or combined cervicosternotomy. The evolution of robotic-assisted thoracic surgery seems to offer a valid treatment option also in patients with thoracic and cervicothoracic thyroid correlate diseases,” said another doctor.
